China’s Huawei wants to overtake Samsung and Apple in smartphone production within the next 5 years to become the largest smartphone producer in the world.
According to a senior executive director, it will take a while but the company sure does have the patience.
“We want to be the number-one smartphone maker in the world. It’s a long distance race, and we have the patience,” said Huawei director Richard Yu.
According to a research from Gartner Inc. last year, Samsung sales remained almost flat and Apple’s sales declined 14% while Huawei’s market share rose to 8.3% behind Samsung and Apple.
The director attributed the company’s growth to its focus on high-end products. “Our growth is mainly coming from the high-end, premium segment,” Mr. Yu said. “If you want to be the leading vendor you have to lead in the high-end.” Mr Richard said
Huawei is reported to have invested billions of dollars in research and development so as to become a better competitor. $9.2 billion was spend on R&D, higher than Apple’s $8.1 but lower than Samsung’s $12.5.
